COBLESKILL, N.Y. – Southern Vermont College ended a Saturday tri-match at SUNY Cobleskill with a 3-2 win over the hosts after the Mountaineers fell 3-0 to Lancaster Bible College in non-conference women's volleyball action.
SVC went all five sets against the Fighting Tigers at Iorio Gymnasium to pick up the team's first win of the year. The Mountaineers (1-12) are off until Friday when they host Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts for a 7 p.m. start.
LANCASTER BIBLE 3 – SOUTHERN VERMONT 0
LBC won the second match of the day with set scores of 25-8, 25-14, and 25-17.
The Mountaineers were led by sophomore Sarah Billow (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) who had five kills, four digs, and two service aces. Junior Liv Sowles (Sacramento, Calif.) followed with four kills and six digs while sophomore Abigail Landon (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) had team-highs of seven digs and eight assists. Bennington College freshman Kemly Derby (New York City, N.Y.) registered three digs, three assists, and two kills in the effort.
SOUTHERN VERMONT 3 – SUNY COBLESKILL 2
The Mountaineers edged the hosts 25-22 in the opening set of the final match, but the Fighting Tigers came back to tie the contest with a 25-15 win in the second. SVC took the third by a 25-23 margin—only to see SUNY Cobleskill take the fourth 25-17 and force the decisive fifth. That's where Southern Vermont won the match with a 15-9 tally.
Sowles led all players with a season-high 20 kills while adding 12 digs, eight blocks, and three assists to her line. Billow recorded 11 kills, seven digs, three aces, and two assists while Landon chalked up 35 assists, 14 digs, and four kills.
Derby chipped in with 10 digs, four kills and six blocks as senior captain Julia Florence (Salem, Mass.) had three kills in the win. Freshman Gabby Rushia (Cohoes, N.Y.) provided eight kills and three aces for SVC.
