NEC Punches Ticket to NECC Women's Soccer Championship

HENNIKER, N.H. - The second seeded New England College women's soccer team eliminated the sixth seeded, Becker College, in the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) playoff tournament.

The Pilgrims will improve to 13-7-2 overall with a 7-1-1 record in the NECC. Becker with see their season come to a close with a 10-8-3 record overall and a 4-4-1 record in the NECC.

The Pilgrims got the scoring started early on a goal by Michaela Pomeroy (Thetford, Vt.). Emilie Nowakowski(Meriden, Conn.) put a ball to the middle of the field were Pomeroy touched the ball forward to the 18-yard box. She set the ball up and beat the Hawk goalkeeper on the right side of the goal. The Hawks responded just under two minutes later off a corner kick set play. Ciara McKissick headed home the corner kick from Lindsey Keith. The half would end at a 1-1 score.
The Pilgrims applied pressure towards the Hawk goal for nearly 20 minutes of the second half. Tara Bainbridge(South Hadley, Mass.) and Emily LePage (West Greenwich, R.I.) worked a give and go in the offensive end of the field. LePage fired a shot that the goalkeeper got a hand on and the ball ricocheted off the post. The ball rolled towards the other side of the goal and Pomeroy attacked it to finish of the play in the 62nd minute to give the Pilgrims a 2-1 lead. Dawn Johnson (Farmingdale, N.Y.) gave the Pilgrims a 3-1 lead when she fired home a shot from about 35 yards out. She took a free kick after a Becker foul and put the shot in the direct center of the goal, right under the crossbar to end the Pilgrim lead to 3-1. Becker would apply pressure to the Pilgrim end in the remaining 13 minutes of play.
The Pilgrims held a 14-4 shots on goal advantage. Becker earned three corner kicks to NEC's two.

Kayla Pugliese (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) made three saves on four shots on goal in the complete game for her 12thwon of the season. Lyndsey Cobb-Wilkins made 11 saves on 14 shots on goal in the losing effort.

The Pilgrims will await the winner of Lesley University and Southern Vermont College, who start at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at Lesley. They will be playing for the NECC Championship.
