LEICESTER, Mass. – Junior midfielder Christina Boucher (Pawcatuck, Conn.) scored five goals as host Becker College held off visiting Wheelock College, 14-13, in the semifinals of the NECC Women's Lacrosse Championship Tournament on Wednesday evening at Alumni Field in Leicester. The Hawks of Becker advance to the finals with a record of 7-9 while the Wildcats of Wheelock end their season at 4-11.
Becker led by as much as eight with 1:48 remaining in the first half off a goal from Boucher that saw the Hawks go up 11-3. The Wildcats rallied throughout the second period, however, cutting the Becker lead to one with 1:02 remaining. The Hawks managed to control the ball as the seconds ticked off the clock, however, preserving the win.
Junior attacker Ashley Mossey (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) had four goals for Becker, while freshman attacker Kailee Ruyack (Beacon, N.Y.) and sophomore attacker Mindy Moreau (Canterbury, Conn.) each scored twice. Freshman goalie Shelby Wicks (Shaftsbury, Vt.) finished with ten stops in net.
Junior midfielder Katie Gavin (Manchester-by-the-Sea, Mass.) led the furious Wildcat rally, scoring four goals, including the last of the game on a free position strike to cut it to one. Sophomore midfielder Molly Centore (Kennebunk, Maine) and junior midfielder Christina Cubera (Baltimore, Md.) each contributed three scores. Junior goalie Monica Bettle (Pembroke, Mass.) totaled 14 saved saves.
Becker will play at Regis College in the NECC finals on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
