NECC Releases 2019 Men's Volleyball Postseason Honors

MARSHFIELD, Mass. –  The NECC announced its 2019 Men's Volleyball All-Conference teams and major award winners on Tuesday morning. The awards were voted on by the conference's eight coaches following the conclusion of the regular season.

Elms sophomore Jeremy Torres (Juncos, P.R.) was voted the 2019 NECC Player of the Year, while his coach, Sheila Gisbrecht was named Coach of the Year. Endicott senior, Ryan Healy (Fair Lawn, N.J.) was named the Defensive Player of the Year while Nichols freshman Lance Law (Taunton, Mass.) claimed Rookie of the Year accolades.

Player of the Year Jeremy Torres is joined on first team by his teammate Jovanny Torres (Juncos, P.R.) while Rookie of the Year Lance Law was also voted to the first team. Endicott's Bryn Lipton (Rockville, Ill.), Donovan Dey (Fairport, N.Y.), and Jeremy Doski (Sandy Hook, Conn.) rounded out the remaining first team selections. 

The second team features three Elms Blazers, John Dunphy (Farmington, Conn.), Carlos Mercado (Barranquitas, P.R.) and Jake Johnson (Warwick, R.I.). While Endicott's Seth Braquet (Destrehan, La.), Nichols', Ray Wang (Chengdu, China), and Newbury's Rory Dobbins (Warwick, R.I.) round out the second team selections.

NECC Player of the Year – Jeremy Torres, Elms (So., OH, Juncos, P.R.)


In his sophomore campaign, Jeremy Torres helped lead the Blazers to a 27-4 overall record while going 13-1 in NECC play and also reaching a program high at No. 7 in the AVCA National Poll.  The outside hitter is the current league leader in total kills (343) and kills per set (3.69) while also owning a .317 hitting percentage, good for second in the conference. Overall, Torres was a four-time NECC Player of the Week selection (weeks ending 3/5/19, 3/10/19, 3/17/19 and 3/31/19), highlighted by three straight weeks of recognition.

  

NECC Defensive Player of the Year – Ryan Healy, Endicott (Sr., L, Fair Lawn, N.J.)

Senior Ryan Healy capped off his final season with his second consecutive NECC Defensive Player of the Year honor. Healy helped lead the Gulls to a 23-6, 13-1 record while being ranked as high as No. 7 in the AVCA National Poll. The libero currently ranks second in total digs (251) while his serve receive has enabled Endicott's offense to hit for the highest average in conference play (.376). Healy made an appearance in all 29 matches this season while committing only one receive error.

  

NECC Rookie of the Year – Lance Law, Nichols (Fr., RS, Taunton, Mass.)

Freshman Lance Law helped lead Nichols in their inaugural season to a 16-9, 10-4 record as the Bison finished third at the end of the regular season in conference play. Law was instrumental in the team's success while leading the conference stat sheet in kills (152) and points (178). The first-year dominated weekly awards claiming five Rookie of the Week nods, three being consecutive (for weeks ending 2/14/19, 3/10/19, 3/17/19, 3/24/19 and 4/7/19).

 

Coach of the Year – Sheila Gisbrecht, Elms


In her 11th season at the helm for the Blazers, Gisbrecht led her squad to a 27-4 overall record, and a 13-1 record in conference play. Elms will enter the 2019 postseason as the top seed under her guidance. The Blazers consistently appeared in the AVCA rankings this season while reaching the program's highest-ever ranking at No. 7. Elms leads the NECC stat sheet in many categories including overall kills (1312), conference kills (576), overall assists (1224), conference assists (530), overall digs (1218), conference digs (551), overall solo blocks (62) and conference solo blocks (26). This is Gisbrecht's fourth NECC Coach of the Year accolade on the men's side (2009, 2012, 2018, 2019).
