Player of the Week
Bryn Lipton (Jr., OH), Endicott College
Junior Bryn Lipton (Rockford, Ill.) guided Endicott to a 3-2 overall record with wins over Wells, Elmira and No. 4 Kean. Three of the five opponents the Gulls faced over the first two weekends of the season were ranked in the top ten in the country by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Over the course of five matches, Lipton compiled 2.68 kills per set (59 total), a .266 hitting percentage, 0.77 service aces per set (17 total), 1.50 digs per set (33 total), 0.32 blocks per set (1 solo, 6 assisted), and 3.6 points per set (80.0 total). He tallied double-digit kills in four of the five matches, while also posting a double-double with 14 digs against No. 7 Stevenson. Lipton’s best match of the week came against No. 4 Kean, as the junior outside hitter registered a match-high 14 kills, to go along with a .344 hitting percentage, one assist, four service aces, eight digs and two blocks (one solo, one assisted). The win for Endicott marked the highest nationally ranked opponent the Gulls have ever beaten in program history.
Rookie of the Week
Carlos Mercado (Fr., S/OP), Elms College
Freshman Carlos Mercado (Barranquitas, P.R.) averaged 6.35 assists per set while splitting duties for the majority of the two opening weekends. He racked up a total of 146 assists and had a season-high 39 assists in a 3-0 win over Thiel. The rookie had double-digit assists in six out Elms’ seven matches, and 20 or more assists in three of those. He also posted two double-doubles, finishing with 10 digs each against Southern Virginia and Eastern Mennonite. Mercado averaged 2.22 digs per set, while also tacking on eight total blocks.
