Newbury Adds Men's Lacrosse as 17th Sport

BROOKLINE, Mass. - Newbury College is pleased to announce that it will add men’s lacrosse to its athletics lineup in the New England Collegiate Conference, beginning with the spring 2019 season. The College recently approved adding the sport to its intercollegiate athletics program, which currently sponsors 16 intercollegiate sport programs; eight men’s teams and eight women’s teams.

According to CollegeCross.com, 27 institutions added a lacrosse program in 2017, including the addition of Newbury College’s women’s lacrosse team.  Sixteen of the 27 started men’s lacrosse programs.

According to recent U.S. Lacrosse reports, men’s lacrosse is the second fastest-growing sport at the high school level over a five-year period, with a 29.5-percent increase which only trails the growth rate of women’s lacrosse (29.8%).  Over 176,000 high school students participate in boy’s lacrosse among the 2677 schools.

“Since we announced the addition of our women’s lacrosse program two years ago, we have experienced an increase in interest for men’s lacrosse on campus.” said Newbury College Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper. “I am pleased that Newbury continues to strengthen the Athletics program by adding a sport that is very popular in the Northeast, especially at the high school level.”

“The development of the College’s Strategic Plan in 2014 started the conversation of adding men’s lacrosse to our intercollegiate athletic program.  Newbury has been very successful in the development of new sport programs and our student-athletes have continued a high-level of success both on the field and in the classroom,” said Newbury College President Joseph L. Chillo LP.D. “Men’s lacrosse will enable the College to continue to transform the student experience and will enable a new group of student-athletes to experience the benefits of a Newbury education."

An immediate national search for the first Head Men’s Lacrosse Coach has commenced.
