Babson's Crawford Shines in Opening Round of NCAA Division III Golf Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla.—Sophomore Benjamin Crawford (Houston, Texas) shot a 2-over par 74 on the Las Colinas course and the Babson College men's golf team sits in 29th position after the first round of the Division III Championship at the Mission Inn Resort.

The Beavers posted a team score of 322, their highest of the season, and will enter the second round 16 shots in back of 18th-place Hope. The 42-team field will be cut down to the low 18 squads and the top six individuals not on those teams for the final two rounds.

Top-ranked Huntingdon College (293) is the first round leader at 5-over par, three shots clear of second-ranked Texas-Tyler, sixth-ranked LaGrange and eighth-ranked Rhodes. Defending champions Claremont-Mudd-Scripps are tied for 11th at 301 and 17 teams are within 11 shots of the lead after the opening round.

Crawford, who is tied for 24th on the individual leaderboard, made the turn at 1-under and made two of his four birdies over the final four holes to record his second lowest round of the year. First-year Chris Bornhorst (West Newton, Mass.) was 2-over on the outward nine, but made a pair of late double bogeys to finish with a 7-over par round of 79.

Sophomore Riley Whitham (Harvard, Mass.) fired an 83, while junior Kyle Alexander (Brewer, Maine) and sophomore Lukas Linemayr (Hampton, N.H.) struggled on the back nine and both finished at 86.

The Green and White will begin its second round on Tuesday at 12 p.m. on the 10th tee of the El Campeon course.
