New England College Captures Top Seed in 2020 NECC Men's Basketball Championship

MANSFIELD, Mass. – New England College finished the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) regular season schedule with a 10-2 record to clinch the No. 1 seed in the NECC Championship.  The Pilgrims led the league in points per game with 89.3, behind Izaiah Winston-Brooks (Roxbury, Mass.) 17.9 points per game. Calvin Cheek (Mattapan, Mass.) has been a force defensively, as he leads the league, as well as the NCAA, with 4.2 steals per game. The Pilgrims will sit out the first round and await the winner of the game between No. 4 Dean College and No. 5 Elms College.  

Defending NECC Champions Mitchell College finished league play at 8-4 to secure the second seed in the tiebreaker over Eastern Nazarene College. The Mariners, who earned the remaining first round bye, will expect Hasani Williams (Miramar, Fla.) to make an impact in the postseason, as the forward is averaging 15.1 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Mitchell will await the winner of No. 6 Becker and No. 3 Eastern Nazarene.   

Eastern Nazarene College has been awarded the third seed, finishing with an 8-4 record in NECC play. The Lions are led by Garrett Crandell’s (Bristol, Tenn.) 15.5 points per game. The Lions will host No. 6 Becker College (4-8), who is led by Mateus Ribeiro’s (Sao Paulo, Brazil) 14.6 points per game. The two teams will square off for the right to move on to face No. 2 Mitchell on Thursday, February 27.

No. 4 Dean finished at 7-5 in league play, and feature the league’s top scorer in Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.), who averages 25.6 points per game. Dean will host No. 5 Elms (5-7) on Tuesday, February 25. The Blazers will look to D.J. Edelen (Prince George, Va.) to make an impact, as he is in the top 10 in the league in scoring, with 13.2 points per game.

The winners of the two semifinal games will face off in the NECC Championship on Saturday, February 29 at the highest remaining seed.

Game 4: Game 2 Winner at #1 New England Col. – 8:00 p.m.

Championship - Saturday, February 29, 2020  

Game 5: Semifinal Winners at the highest remaining seed- TBA
