NECC Announces Men's Basketball Major Awards and All-Conference Teams

MANSFIELD, Mass. –  The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) announced its 2019-20 Men’s Basketball All-Conference teams and major award winners on Monday afternoon. The awards were voted on by the conference’s seven coaches following the conclusion of the regular season. Five conference schools are represented on the all-conference teams, while all seven institutions had a student-athlete honored on the Del Malloy Sportsmanship Team. New England College led the way with three honorees, as well as two of the four major awards.

Dean College senior guard Jordan Booker (Waterbury, Conn.) was voted the 2019-20 NECC Player of the Year. New England College’s junior guard Calvin Cheek was named Defensive Player of the Year, while Becker College freshman Terrance Edwards (New Haven, Conn.) was named Rookie of the Year.  New England College’s head coach Charlie Mason was voted Coach of the Year by his peers.

Booker headlines the first team selections, while Cheek was also awarded first team honors, and is joined by his teammate, junior guard Izaiah Winston-Brooks (Roxbury, Mass). The first team also features Eastern Nazarene College junior guard Garrett Crandell (Bristol, Tenn.) and Mitchell senior Hasani Williams (Miramar, Fla.).

Becker is represented on the second team by junior Mateus Ribeiro (Sao Paulo, Brazil). Dean’s Jordan Lynch-Rexroth (Harrisburg, Pa.) is also a second team selection, as is Noah Cheney (Bend, Ore.) of Eastern Nazarene.  Matt Finke (Wolcott, Conn.) from Mitchell and Jamal Allen (Dorchester, Mass.) of New England College round out the second team selections.

NECC Player of the Year – Jordan Booker, Dean (Sr., G, Waterbury, Conn.)

In his senior campaign, Jordan Booker filled up the stat sheet, leading the NECC with 28.0 points per game in league play. He also led the league with 6.6 assists per game in league play, and was second in steals with 2.9. Overall, Booker’s 25.6 points per game is ranked eighth in NCAA Division III. His 6.9 assists per game is ranked fifth in Division III, while his 2.64 steals per game puts him at ninth in the NCAA. Booker led Dean to a 7-5 conference record, as well as a postseason berth. He was a three-time NECC Player of the Week selection (weeks ending 2/2/20, 2/9/20, 2/23/20).

NECC Defensive Player of the Year – Calvin Cheek, New England Col. (Jr., G, Mattapan, Mass.)

Junior Calvin Cheek was the leader of a New England College defense that held conference opponents to 78.8 points per game. Cheek was masterful on the defensive end, leading the league with 4.8 steals per game in league play. His 4.2 steals per game overall leads the NCAA. This is Cheek’s second consecutive NECC Defensive Player of the Year award (2019, 2020).

NECC Rookie of the Year – Terrance Edwards, Becker (Fr., F, New Haven, Conn.)

Freshman Terrance Edwards made an immediate impact for the Hawks, helping them to a postseason berth in his rookie campaign. Appearing in all 12 conference games, he averaged 6.1 points and 2.4 rebounds per game. He shot 56.4 percent from the floor. Edwards earned NECC Rookie of the Week honors five times (weeks ending 11/11/19, 11/24/19, 1/26/20, 2/2/20 and 2/16/20).

Coach of the Year – Charlie Mason, New England Col.

In his eighteenth season at the helm for the Pilgrims, Mason led his squad to a 10 and 2 conference record, the regular season title, and the No. 1 seed in the 2020 NECC Men’s Basketball Championship. In addition, for the first time in program history, the Pilgrims appeared in the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Northeast Regional Poll on February 19.
