BOSTON, Mass. - The Wheelock field hockey team shut out Bay Path University in the New England Collegiate Conference(NECC) semifinal game on Wednesday night with a final score of 7-0.
Wheelock got on the board early when senior Katie Frade (Dartmouth, Mass.) beat her defender and drew the Bay Path goalie out of her net. Frade sent the ball across the goal area, where Julia D'Onofrio (Salem, N.H.) put the ball in the back of the net. D'Onofrio would go on to score two more goals to complete a hat trick in the semifinal game.
Wheelock scored again five minutes later when Frade positioned herself to knock in a rebounded shot attempt to record her first of three goals on the night. Frade would tally a total of 8 points, with three goals and two assists.
Bay Path would push the ball up the field to give themm an offensive chance, but the shot attempt of Taryn Karol-Chik (Bridgewater, Mass.) went just left of the goal. Wheelock would score two more goals by Frade to lead 4-0 at the break.
It only took Wheelock 1:36 to score in the second half, when sophomore Melanie Newberg (Raynam, Mass.) crossed the ball to D'Onfrio for her second goal of the game. In the 56th minute, Wheelock freshman Mary-Kate Pereira (Shrewsbury, Mass.) sent a corner to senior Alex LeBlanc (Atkinson, N.H.) who sent an aerial shot over the Bay Path defense and past the goal keeper to put Wheelock up 6-0. Wheelock would get one more goal from D'Onfrio to make it 7-0.
The Bay Path goalie Bethany Rogers (Plymouth, Mass.) had an impressive night with 14 saves. Wheelock's goalkeeper Cassidy Smith (South Berwick, Maine) faced two total shots and no shots on goal.
Wheelock will face Elms College on Saturday for the NECC Championship (1:00 p.m./Wheelock Live Streaming).
