Newbury's Gulla Completes OCS Marine Training

BROOKLINE, Mass.-Michael Gulla (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) returns to Newbury for his junior year after completing the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School (OCS) over the past summer. For the last two years, he has been a starter on the Newbury baseball team as well as a member of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Fresh off its first conference regular season tournament championship, the Daniel Webster College baseball program received some icing on the cake Monday night, receiving the eighth and final at large bid to the ECAC Division III New England Championship tournament, the first in the history of the program.

Needing a win in the final day of a weather-shortened double-elimination tournament, top-seeded Daniel Webster rallied from an early day 8-6 loss to second-seeded Mitchell College rebounding to eliminate third-seeded Becker College 7-5, and then top Mitchell in the nightcap, 12-1 and earn a share of the title with the Mariners Sunday at Harvey Woods Field.

Junior Bruce Brown (Lowell, Mass.) connected for two two-run homers and knocked in four leading host and tournament top seed Daniel Webster past fourth-seeded Southern Vermont, 12-5 in the opening game of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) tournament championship series Friday afternoon at Harvey Woods Field. he win gave the Eagles (19-15) a 10:00 a.m. date with second-seeded Mitchell College (16-12), 6-5 winners of third-seeded Becker in the days second contest. Becker (14-17) stayed alive with a 5-4 victory over Southern Vermont in the nightcap, eliminating the Mountaineers.
