Southern Vermont College Sharief Hashim Named Director of Athletics

BENNINGTON, Vt. – Southern Vermont College Director of Athletics Sharief Hashim had the word ‘interim’ removed from his title Saturday as the College has decided to keep him as the permanent head of the athletic department.

In an email sent to Southern Vermont personnel last week, SVC President David Rees Evans announced the change of Hashim’s employment status to College administrators, faculty, and staff.

“With the agreement of the cabinet and after careful examination of various key issues—such as athletic recruitment, coaching hires, and crisis management—it is clear that Sharief is the right person for the job,” Evans said in his email. “He has strong relationships across the [New England Collegiate Conference] and has brought a commitment to excellence to all aspects of his work this year.”

Hashim was named the interim director back in October after serving in other positions around the College since 2013. Included in those were the athletics liaison for admissions and an admissions counselor—a pair of roles that played an important part in helping athletics increase its recruiting success through the winter and this past spring.

“[Sharief] has made three terrific head-coach hires who promise to significantly enhance programs that have struggled recently,” Evans continued in his statement to SVC employees. “In addition, he has been a thoughtful advocate for the athletic department while clearly understanding its role in the College’s overall strategy. We are looking forward to great things at the [Mountaineer Athletic Center] this year and into the future.”

Hashim plans to utilize his permanent post to build upon the department’s culture and success—among its staff and the Mountaineer athletes—which he has helped establish over the last nine months.

“I am humbled and excited for this opportunity,” said Hashim. “I'm grateful to President Evans and the cabinet for their confidence and trust in me to lead our athletic department. We have an outstanding group of hard-working coaches and staff; I will continue to support their efforts to ensure our student-athletes have a well-rounded college life experience.”

Hashim came to Bennington in 2013 from the Greater Washington area where he was Head Coach for the varsity boys’ basketball team at Wheaton High School in Silver Spring, Md. He was the recipient of the 2013 National Association of Counties’ Achievement Award for the Montgomery County government--in part for his work in supporting a successful partnership with high school students and U.S. Navy Seals. When first working at Southern Vermont, he was the head coach for the men’s junior varsity basketball team and an assistant coach for the men’s varsity program.

Hashim received his master’s degree in Sports Management with an Athletic Administration certificate from Southern New Hampshire University in 2016 after earning his bachelor’s degree in Organizational Management with a Counseling Psychology minor from Columbia Union College in 2008. He is also a graduate of the NCAA Division III Institute for Administrative Advancement.
