BROOKLINE, Mass. – Newbury Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper has announced the resumption of the men's golf program effective immediately. The team will begin competition in the Fall of 2018. With the addition of men's golf, the Nighthawk Department of Athletics will sponsor 16 varsity NCAA Division III programs.
David Rixham will return to Newbury as the Head Men's Golf Coach and Sports Information Director on December 1. Rixham served as the part-time Nighthawk Sports Information Coordinator during the 2016-2017 academic year. He filled the role as Interim Sports Information Director at Emerson College for the last four months.
"I'm truly humbled to return to the place where I started my career in collegiate athletics and couldn't say thank you enough to Director of Athletics Jonathan Harper, President Joe Chillo, and Vice President & Chief of Staff Paul Martin, along with countless others who made this opportunity possible," said Rixham. "I will bring high energy and effort to my positions at Newbury College and look forward to the fall of 2018 when my journey in coaching begins."
As a student-athlete, Rixham played four seasons of golf, captaining the Worcester State University team in his last two seasons. He has three career college victories, including the 2015 MASCAC Individual Championship, while leading the Lancers to the 2015 MASCAC team title; the first at Worcester State since 1984. Rixham also earned the NECC Freshman Golfer of the Year Award in 2009, playing for Becker College.
"I am excited to welcome Dave back to the Newbury family in a full-time role as Head Men's Golf Coach and SID," said Harper. "His passion for the game of golf and his knowledge of the Newbury student-athlete profile is a perfect fit as our next head golf coach. Bringing the men's golf program back to Newbury gives our current and future students another opportunity to play at the Division III level."
With the addition of men's golf at Newbury, the New England Collegiate Conference will immediately regain the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III national tournament. The other current members of the NECC who sponsor men's golf include Babson College, Becker College, Dean College, Elms College, Mitchell College and Springfield College.
"I'd be remiss if I didn't say thank you to my two coaches, Mark Gurski and Zach Camarra, from Worcester State," said Rixham. "They provided me many of the tools that I will use to teach my future student-athletes. I have had the pleasure to caddy for a top-25 player in Massachusetts in Zach, and throughout the six-year friendship we've held, he has thought me more about the game of golf and more about being a teacher than I could have ever thought possible and that's what gives me the confidence in resuming Men's Golf at Newbury as their Head Coach."
