MANSFIELD, MASS.- The New England Collegiate Conference (NECC), in collaboration with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), is hosting a webinar surrounding race relations in sport. The webinar, entitled ‘Valuing Every Player: A Discussion on Sports and Race,’ will take place Thursday, July 16th at 11:00 a.m. PCA trainers Mike Jackson and Erik Johnson will be leading the discussion.
The conversation will touch on a wide range of topics, including understanding the lens through which Black and Brown student-athletes experience the world, to embracing discomfort in discussions about race, and being an ally.
While race relations have recently been brought to a boiling point, it has been an issue on college campuses throughout the United States in recent years. In June of 2019, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) reported a seven percent increase in cases of white supremacy materials being found on college campuses from 2018 to 2019. This was the third-straight year an increase has been reported.
In November of 2019, the FBI also reported an increase of hate crimes on college campuses. This number has increased each year between 2016 and 2018.
The NECC and its institutions have an extremely diverse make-up, and NECC Commissioner Jacob VanRyn sees a great deal of value in continuing the discussion on race. “These challenging conversations and uncomfortable discussions are long overdue. We’re extremely proud of the racial diversity within the NECC and hope that conversations like these will help make us all better as we do our part as educators to help listen, learn, and lead.”
According to PCA, “Making the effort to understand the experience of Black and Brown players and teammates will make us all better. We get better when we get out of our comfort zone.”
Through this webinar, the NECC hopes to explore ways to better the student-athlete experience both on campus and in sport. The webinar is open to the public, and there is no limit on attendees. Webinar login information is forthcoming.
This webinar continues the partnership between the NECC and the PCA, as PCA recently presented to the NECC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) in November.
