Friday Features: Becker College Awarded Scholarship from Global Alliance for International Student Advancement

WORCESTER, Mass. - Becker College has been awarded a $15,000 scholarship from the Global Alliance for International Student Advancement (GAISA), in support of the College’s academic mission. Earlier this summer, GAISA and Becker entered into an MOU focused on offering for-credit online classes for international students in China, in basic STEM fields; developing an online orientation module for international students; and building enrollment from China. GAISA will serve as supplemental academic support for those students as part of the agreement.

“When GAISA was looking for a partner to pilot this new initiative, the decision to approach Becker was easy,” said Richard J. DeCapua, Ed.D., Founding President of GAISA. “Their commitment to the academic and social development of their students is of the highest regard. However, it is their forward-thinking approach to assisting international students during this global pandemic which made collaborating with them an easy choice and fantastic partnership.”

Becker College President Nancy P. Crimmin, Ed.D., said,  “Becker College is deeply grateful for the support of GAISA, which will not only benefit our students during this challenging time, but will also provide low-cost online courses for students in China who cannot travel internationally, or who otherwise could not afford them. Being able to provide Becker’s deep academic experience for them will keep them on track to pursue and achieve their educational goals.”

Founded in 2020, GAISA is a non-profit organization building a new model of international student success in higher education through a student-centered, evidence-based approach to collaboratively cultivate and promote insights and resources that advance the outcomes of international students around the globe.

Led by a Founding Advisory Council composed of experts in the field of international education and student success, GAISA has set an ambitious agenda. As higher education evaluates its purpose in a post-pandemic world, GAISA intends to reimagine the possibilities of supporting and advancing international student success in higher education.
